‘But we can be engaged,’ he insisted. ‘In fact, we’ll go out and buy an engagement ring today. I want to announce to the world that Annie McKinnon is my woman.’
She had thought she was as happy as it was possible to be, but now as the sun climbed above the distant hill, coating the rooftops of Rome with an apricot glaze, and as she and Theo turned back into their new little home, Annie experienced the deepest happiness of all.
